Dog Training Classes in Metro Detroit and Ferndale
About the Impulse Control Classes
Impulse Control 1 and 2
If you’ve taken classes with Fido before, you’ll take this class after completing Dog Basics or Canine Middle School. If you haven’t taken a class with us before, that’s okay too! This two-part class is for dogs of any age to work on building our skills for cues as well as environmental distractions. Help your dog find that fantastic focus, able to pay attention to you with even the most difficult distractions. Does it seem like your dog has the memory of a goldfish, lasting only a couple of seconds? Do you struggle on walks with keeping your dog away from food on the ground or keeping them from lunging to greet other people or dogs? Even if your pup has some great skills in concentration and memory, this class can help build what they already have and create long-lasting habits. We will use established positive reinforcement techniques to build self-control and help your pup avoid temptations such as food on the ground (even hamburgers!), toys, chasing critters, jumping up, and pulling to greet other people or dogs. Your dog will learn that waiting for you to say it’s okay will provide huge rewards, and your bond will strengthen as a result. This class is for dogs of any skill and age, but dogs should know “sit” and “down” reliably. Reactivity to people or dogs is okay, please contact us with any questions! Even if your pup has some great skills in concentration and memory, this class can help build what they already have and create long-lasting habits. These classes fill quickly, so contact us today with any questions by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 248-607-9350
Impulse Control 1 does not have dogs in the first class (Impulse Control 2, however, DOES have dogs in the first class). Why is that? We want to be able to understand you and your dogs needs before your dog is in the building, set goals, and communicate about what happens in class. Each class is different, and each dog is different. Our individualized approach to training means that we want to understand you and your dog thoroughly and be ready to provide you with the best possible experience. Many of our classes have you set a personal goal for you and your dog, and it’s much easier to talk through the goals and expectations without your dog present. Additionally, this one class period sets us up for success so that we can hit the ground running when your dog is in class. We try to get the talking out of the way on the first day, so that we can maximize class learning time for your dog. It’s hard to be worrying about your dog, keeping them comfortable and happy, and listening to the instructor at the same time. As instructors, we’ve all experienced the times we’ve sat in classes with our own dogs and our dogs just got increasingly bored and agitated while we listened to the instructor. We want to avoid that experience for you, so we have a single class with no dogs so we can go over everything we need to go over without an antsy puppy next to you. This is also a time to get to know your instructor, ask any questions you might have about your dog or the curriculum, and get to know our training space if you haven’t been here before.
